American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

In the years following World War I, America was gripped by the fear that the Communist Revolution that had taken place in Russia would spread to the United States. As is often the case when fear outweighs rational debate, civil liberties paid the price. In November 1919 and January 1920, in what notoriously became known as the “Palmer Raids,” Attorney General Mitchell Palmer began rounding up and deporting so-called radicals. Thousands of people were arrested without warrants and without regard to constitutional protections against unlawful search and seizure. Those arrested were brutally treated and held in horrible conditions. In the face of these egregious civil liberties abuses, a small group of people decided to take a stand and thus was born the American Civil Liberties Union.

Bazelon, (Voting rights of people with disabilities)

An election official, poll worker, or service provider cannot make decisions about whether a person is competent to vote. In virtually every state with a voter competency requirement, a court must make the determination that a person does not meet the requirement.56 Even state laws disenfranchising “idiots” and “insane” people have been read to require a court finding of incompetence.

The Chamberlain Network

The U.S. military has a longstanding history of non-partisanship that is central to our military might. Our merit-based system — which relies on skill over political loyalty for advancement — ensures our military is led by the most qualified officers. Keeping the military out of the partisan political fray is a key component of a healthy democracy, allowing the armed forces to focus on matters of national security — upholding the nations’ interest and safeguarding its own people.

The Chamberlain Network is tracking rumored and confirmed government actions — including legislation, appointments, executive orders, and domestic deployment of the military — that threaten to politicize our military and/or disrupt our military readiness. Veterans must feel empowered to speak out in support of the longstanding political independence of the military in their own communities and with their elected officials.

Committee for the First Amendment

This Committee was initially created during the McCarthy Era, a dark time when the federal government repressed and persecuted American citizens for their political beliefs. They targeted elected officials, government employees, academics, and artists. They were blacklisted, harassed, silenced, and even imprisoned.

The McCarthy Era ended when Americans from across the political spectrum finally came together and stood up for the principles in the Constitution against the forces of repression.

Freedom From Religion Foundation

The history of Western civilization shows us that most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion. In modern times the first to speak out for prison reform, for humane treatment of the mentally ill, for abolition of capital punishment, for women’s right to vote, for death with dignity for the terminally ill, and for the right to choose contraception, sterilization and abortion have been freethinkers, just as they were the first to call for an end to slavery. The Foundation works as an umbrella for those who are free from religion and are committed to the cherished principle of separation of state and church.

Many are looking for ways to get involved to stand up against attacks to our rights and freedoms.

As individuals, groups, and communities we can refuse to cooperate with official policies and actions nonviolently. When we take away our acquiescence at a massive scale, undemocratic actors can be stopped in their tracks.

We are a loose network of trainers teaching folks about these powerful tools of collective noncompliance and mass noncooperation based on tried and true tactics used by movements from around the world fighting against authoritarianism.

Resist & Unsubscribe

Americans are feeling powerless to thwart the Trump administration’s assault on our nation’s values. Praised by tech CEOs, surrounded by sycophants, and enriched by his return to the White House, the president’s actions march on unchecked. Americans, however, have a powerful weapon that has been hiding in plain sight.

First, we must recognize that the president is unfazed by citizen outrage, the courts, or the media. He responds to one thing: the market. The most potent weapon to resist the administration is a targeted, month-long national economic strike — a coordinated campaign that attacks tech companies and firms enabling ICE  — to inflict maximum damage with minimal impact on consumers. In sum, the shortest path to change without hurting consumers is an economic strike targeted at the companies driving the markets and enabling our president.

Trans Youth Emergency Project

Cruel laws banning best-practice gender-affirming care have passed in 27 states across the country – and the Trump Administration has attempted to further restrict access to care. As a result, thousands of transgender youth and their families are being forced to identify new healthcare providers, travel extreme distances, and take on significant expenses just to get the care they need.

The Trans Youth Emergency Project (TYEP) is here to help families navigate this complex and exhausting maze, offering logistical and financial support. Our team provides 1-on-1 custom patient navigation services to unimpacted providers and supports families of transgender youth with travel grants.
